BINNA by Bianca Toots
My name is Bianca and I am a jewellery artist based in Tallinn, Estonia. I graduated from the Jewellery Department of the Estonian Academy of Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in 2024. During my studies I also spent exchange semesters at Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence, Italy, and at Campus Idar-Oberstein in Germany.
I am drawn to both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches, and my work finds its place somewhere between the two. These days I work primarily with filigree, with a focus on ears. Anatomical ear jewellery has been a continuous theme in my work since 2021. Through working with ear moulds I have discovered how the body can guide the design of a piece: no two ears are the same and each requires its own approach. I am interested in wearability that offers seamless comfort: jewellery that rests naturally on the body and feels as though it becomes one with it.
My work grows out of small observations: conversations, textures, the tactile qualities of sound, shifting moods, changing seasons and moments of everyday magic that I try to bring into life through making.
BINNA is a continuation of my artistic practice, translated into jewellery made for everyday wear. Each piece is handmade and shaped with care, meant to offer a sense of companionship. The name BINNA carries several meanings that form a whole. It means ear, a form that echoes through my practice again and again. It means to weave, mirroring the craft of filigree. It means a species of moth. Sometimes late at night moths find their way to my workshop window, so they have started to mean something to me. And it means me.
